Appointments

We run all our surgeries by an appointment only system. Appointments for GPs can be booked and cancelled online. For other appointments telephone the surgery up to 2 weeks before you wish to be seen.

We will respond to requests within 2 working hours.

Depending on the time you submit your request, you may not get a response on the same day.

Who should I see?

We try to keep our GP appointments for patients with more serious health problems. Before you book an appointment to see a doctor, please consider whether an appointment with an advanced nurse practitioner or practice nurse might be appropriate. They can help you with a wide range of medical problems. Our receptionists can help you decide which is the right person for you to see.

Self care

If you have a cough, cold, headache or other minor ailment try treating yourself at home first. Please remember that self-care for common conditions can help free up our GPs’ time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.

Your pharmacist can help too

Pharmacists are highly trained health professionals and can give you confidential health advice for a range of common illnesses and complaints.

Don’t wait for a GP appointment for coughs, colds, aches and pains. Just call your local pharmacy a call or drop in, there’s no need to make an appointment.

Your pharmacists can also help you decide if you need to see a doctor or nurse.

Find out more about free advice and medication from pharmacy first.

NHS 111

111 is the free NHS non-emergency number.

You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation.

Call 111 if:

  • You need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency
  • You think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
  • You don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call
  • You need health information or reassurance about what to do next

A&E

A&E is for life-threatening accidents and emergencies only. Before you go there, ask yourself, “Is it a real emergency?”

If not, please consider using other local health services before you visit A&E.

Extended access appointments

Our surgery premises are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6:30pm however, a group of local surgeries, which includes us, are working together to provide extended hours appointments which will provide you with the opportunity to book routine appointments with local GPs and nurses, at local surgeries in North Wingfield, Clay Cross, Wingerworth, Tibshelf, Alfreton or South Normanton.

This means that you can book appointments up to 8pm, Monday to Friday and on Saturdays and Sundays. These Extended Access Appointments are bookable through the surgery reception just like the appointments held here. There are also a limited number of routine appointments available in surgery on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 7:30am.

We try to make sure you see the doctor of your choice but if they are not available we may ask you to see another doctor.

If you are over 5 minutes late for your appointment, it may not be possible to see you and if you cannot keep your appointment please let us know, however short the notice given. Almost always, this time can be given to another patient. If, however, you fail to attend 3 appointments within a 3 month timeframe, without notification you will be issued with a warning letter explaining that you may be asked to leave our surgery list if you fail to cancel an appointment on a further 2 occasions (within a 6 month period).

Cancelling or changing an appointment

If you are unable to keep an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible, this may enable someone else to be seen.

To cancel your appointment:

If you need help when we are closed

If you need medical help now, use NHS 111 online or call 111.

NHS 111 online is for people aged 5 and over. Call 111 if you need help for a child under 5.

Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

If you need help with your appointment

Please tell us:

  • if there’s a specific doctor, nurse or other health professional you would prefer to respond
  • if you would prefer to consult with the doctor or nurse by phone, face-to-face, by video call or by text or email
  • if you need an interpreter
  • if you have any other access or communication needs

Home visits

Please request a home visit before 10am if possible. This service is for patients who cannot attend surgery.

The doctor on duty may telephone first to ascertain the urgency of the visit.

Home visits take up much more of a doctor’s time than a consultation in the surgery, so if you are mobile please come into the surgery to be seen.
